description These documents are bills of sale (including a mortgage) for purchases of enslaved workers for the Tait Plantations. Purchasers include James Asbury Tait and his son James Goode Tait, Sarah Tait (step-mother of James A.?), Alex B. Simpson, and Thomas H. Snow. The Taits paid taxes on their land, the workers on their land (both enslaved and free), their livestock, money they had loaned out (which was earning them interest), and luxury items such as watches and clocks, horse carriages, and household furniture. The Tait family were plantation owners in Wilcox County, Alabama; active in politics in Georgia, Alabama, and Texas. Family members include Charles Tait (1768-1835), politician and judge in Georgia and Alabama; his son, James Asbury Tait (1791-1855), plantation owner in Wilcox County; and James Goode Tait (1833-1911), the son of James Asbury, who inherited the family plantation. This item has been aggregated as part of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL)'s "Deeply Rooted: The Agricultural & Rural History of the American South" project.
