This image is a color photograph of The Forks of Cypress in Florence, Ala. Postcard text: (back) In the early 1830's, James Jackson, one of the founders of Florence, built this stately mansion on a beautiful knoll overlooking his plantation. Distinguished by 24 massive columns, encircling the building, his residence became a famous meeting place for prominent citizens, who loved to race their horses on the excellent track maintained by James Jackson. Among the noted visitors were Andrew Jackson, James Madison, and James Coffee. Curteichcolor. Library has two copies. Handwritten messages (on back of both) addressed to Mrs. Frances Priess and the Priess Girls, Montgomery, Ala., postmarked April 19, 1962 and August 13, 1963. |
