description This booklet contains songs, poems, drawings, transcribed oral interviews written and compiled by Larry Long, troubadour, and the students and teachers of Spring Garden School in Spring Garden, Alabama. The oral histories consist of elders of the community sharing about their childhood and life experiences, and offering encouragement and wisdom to the students. Students wrote poems, completed drawings and wrote songs with the help of Larry Long which reflect the oral histories of the community elders. Larry Long has partnered with PACERS (Program for the Academic and Cultural Enhancement of Rural Schools) in order to build community and promote the potential of rural schools. Larry Long visited with the students of Spring Garden for one week, at the end of which they produced this booklet. While 1998 appears on the front of the booklet, no other information relating to the date of its creation is related. The booklet includes a list of rural schools in Alabama and a letter from Dr. Jack Shelton describing the work Larry Long does and recognizing the work of the students and teachers at Spring Garden School. A copy of an article is included in the booklet about Larry Long and his work with PACERS by Sandy Byer that appeared in Sing Out!
