Description
Summary:This image is a detailed map of the state of Alabama printed on the back of a 19-page pamphlet titled "Home Seekers and Capitalists Guide to Alabama" which is issued by Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries in 1904. The map shows railroads, capitals, counties, cities, towns, forts, and rivers inside Alabama and small portions of the neighboring states. A map key is provided below the title in the lower portion to explain the use of the size of type to show the relative importance of the place. There is an inset map of the "Environs of Birmingham" at the lower right corner. On the left margin is an index showing Alabama chief cities with populations. Counties inside Alabama are highlighted by the use of different colors. Grid lines are used to show townships. Relief is shown by hachure. The phrases "Copyright, 1902. by Rand, McNally & Co." and "Copyright, 1904. by Rand McNally & Co." are printed right above the bottom neat line. The Guide has pictures of: State Capital, Typical Alabama Home, Governor William D. Jelks, Lieutenant and Acting Governor of Alabama Russell M. Cunningham, Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, R.R. Poole and scenes of Alabama life. It details the advantages offered to the home seeker should he come to Alabama. The map is an original copy of a printed map and is encapsulated. Except for some wear on the edges and fold lines, the map is still in good condition.
