Description
Summary:This image is a map of the state of Alabama showing the result of a land survey conducted by the General Land Office of the Department of the Interior on Oct.2, 1866. There is a note at the bottom of the map stating that “The whole central region of this state is underlain with iron ore in vast beds. There are also coal measures of great thickness and extent. Lead ore is also found.” A map key is provided to explain the meaning of symbols used on the map. The line of Basis Meridian of Huntsville is provided to show the cardinal direction of North, East, South, and West. The line dividing the Northern and Southern Surveyors Districts is clearly drawn on the map. The boundaries between Alabama and Georgia, Alabama and Florida, and Alabama and Mississippi are clearly defined, too. “No.13” is printed on the upper right corner of the map which indicates that this map may have been taken out from an atlas. Other features like counties, cities, and towns are shown. Grid lines are drawn to show townships. The map is photocopy of a printed map and is encapsulated. Except for a torn part on the lower left corner, the map is in a good condition.
