Summary: | This image is a map showing the topography of the areas between Fort Benning Military Reservation in the north and the town of Union in Steward County, Georgia in the south. The map shows contour lines, mountains, rivers, lakes, swamps, railroads, roads, cities, towns, schools, churches, cemeteries, buildings, a retail store, a military base, a reservoir, quarries, orchards, pipelines, and boundaries between states and counties. The map is mapped by the Army Map Service and published for civil use by the Geological Survey, with control by USGS, USC&GS, USCE, and Georgia Geodetic Survey. The topography is done by photogrammetric methods from aerial photographs taken in 1945. The culture and drainage are revised from aerial photographs taken in 1953. The field check is done in 1955. Other detailed information on the map is stated in the lower left corner and reads as follows: “Polyconic projection. 1927 North American datum. 10,000-foot grid based on Georgia coordinate system, west zone, and Alabama coordinate system, east zone, 1,000-meter Universal Transverse Mercator grid ticks, zone 16, shown in blue. Dashed land lines indicate approximate locations”. The contour interval is 10 feet and datum is mean sea level. Along the bottom of the map from left to right are the map information, an image showing the approximate mean declination in 1955, the map scale, a map locator showing the location of the quadrangle in Georgia, and a road classification index. In the lower right corner, there is sub-title “UNION, GA-ALA.” with index number “NW/4 Lumpkin 15’ quadrangle” and “N3207.5-W8452.5/7.5” right below it. The map is an original printed copy and is encapsulated. There are a lot of handwritten markings along the Chattahoochee River on the map. Other than that, the map is in good condition.
