This image is a map showing the topography of Fort Benning Military Reservation and its surrounding areas including the city of Fort Benning in Muscogee County, Georgia and a small section of Russell County, Alabama to the west of the Chattahoochee River. The map shows contour lines, mountains, rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, railroads, roads, cities, towns, airports, an airport control tower, a golf course, orchards, buildings, churches, schools, hospitals, borrow pits, and boundaries between states. The map is mapped by the Army Map Service and is published for civil use by the Geological Survey, with control by USGS, USC&GS, USCE, and Georgia Geodetic Survey. Topography is done with photogrammetric methods from aerial photographs taken in 1945. Culture and drainage are revised from aerial photographs in 1953. Field check is done in 1955. Other detailed information on the map is stated in the lower left corner and is read as follows: “Polyconic projection. 1927 North American datum. 10,000-foot grids based on Georgia coordinate system, west zone, and Alabama coordinate system, east zone. 1,000-meter Universal Transverse Mercator grid ticks, zone 16, shown in blue.” The contour interval is 10 feet and datum is mean sea level. Along the bottom of the map from left to right are the map information, an image showing the approximate mean declination 1955, the map scale, a map locator showing the location of the quadrangle in Georgia, and a road classification index. In the lower right corner, there is a sub-title “Fort Benning, GA.-ALA.” with index number “SW/4, COLUMBUS 15’ QUADRANGLE N3215-W8452.5/7.5” right below it. The map is an original printed copy. There are red ink handwritings throughout the map and red and blue pencil coloring around some river banks. Other than that, the map is in good condition. |
