Summary:This image is a soil survey map of Cherokee County, Alabama in 1924. The map shows the distribution of soil types by colors and symbols. Other features that are shown on the map include cities, towns, schools, churches, cemeteries, roads, railroads, bridges, rivers, and creeks. There is a legend on the soil types and a key for conventional signs in the upper left side. In the bottom left margin, there is a statement mentioning the authorities that were in charge of the soil survey: "W. Edward Hearn, Inspector, District 2. Soils surveyed by L.F. Stroud, in charge, and J.L. Andress, Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, and W.W. Strike and B.H. Williams, U.S. Department of Agriculture". The base map is done in part from U.S. Geological Survey sheets. Names of the persons in charge of different offices are mentioned on the map and are listed as follows: "Henry G. Knight, Chief of U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, A.G. McCall, Chief of Soil Investigations, Curtis F. Marbut, in charge of Soil Survey; S.M. Dunwoody, Commissioner of Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries." The map is printed by "A. Hoen & Co. Lith of Baltimore, Maryland." It is an original printed copy and is encapsulated. Except for some minor wear around the edges and folding lines, the map is in good condition.
