"The Auburn Tigers officially opened their 1949 football campaign in their annual game under the lights in Montgomery's Cramton Bowl when they kicked off to the Rebels of the University of Mississippi. 17,00 fans turned out to get their first glimpse of the '49 edition of the Tigers in action. Mid-way of the first quarter the Mississippi attack began to roll and the Rebels ground out two quick touchdowns. Auburn came fighting back when Sophomore Quaterback Bill Tucker dropped back amd heaved a long aerial to Bobby Briggs who took it on the twenty-yard line and sprinted into the endzone for the Tiger's lone T.D. of the game. This combination of Tucker and Briggs was to prove a constant threat to opposing gridders for the rest of the season. The Tigers were just unable to cope with the fired Mississippi running and passing attack and when the final gun sounded the Rebels were out in front by a score of 40-7. The grandstand coaches went away from Cramton Bowl muttering and shaking their heads. Would Auburn have the same luck and meet with the same disappointment as did the team of '48?"
