description "Auburn, with Billy Atkins in the starring role, defeated a stubborn University of Kentucky team 6-0 before 30,000 nerve-wrecked fans as the Plainsmen took their 16th straight triumph in Cliff Hare Stadium. The Wildcats, who entered the game a two touchdown underdog, battled the Tigers to a scoreless first half, which was a manly, leather popping contest. The outcome was very much in doubt until senior full-back, Billy Atkins broke through the Kentucky line, deflected a pitchout by quarterback Lowell Hughes and alertly re-covered the ball. Bobby Hoppe then got six yards at left end, and Tommy Lorino got the same amount on a tour of the opposite flank. Lloyd Nix lost four yards, and Lorino got six at right end before All-American Lou Michaels stopped him, not with a tackle, but with a jarring smash of his huge elbow. Kentucky then drew a fifteen-yard "unnecessary roughness" penalty placing the ball on their own six yard line. Atkins then gave the final verdict by plunging for a touchdown. Kentucky's deepest penetration was to the Plainsmen 17 yard line in the second quarter. But the Wildcats never scored, thanks to primitive tackling by ends Jerry Wilson and "Red" Phillips, Jackie Burkett, a great sophomore center, guard Zeke Smith and other muscular linemen."
