"Tommy Lorino and Bobby Hoppe, two highly advertised halfbacks, furnished the breakaway punch as Auburn defeated the Florida Gators, 13-0 before an overflowing Home-coming crowd of 36,000 in Cliff Hare Stadium. Auburn's rugged defense held the Gators to a mere 37 yards rushing and 46 yards passing, while gaining 301 yards on the ground and 80 yards in the air. Leading the Plainsmen forward wall were ends Jerry Wilson and "Red" Phillips, center Jackie Burkett, guard Zeke Smith, and tackle Ben Preston. The Tigers drew their first blood late in the second quarter with Bryant Harvard at the controls. With the ball on the Gators' 31 yard line, Hoppe sprinted 25 yards on a reverse to the Florida six, and fullback Billy Atkins slammed through left tackle for the score. Jimmy Dunn, Florida's quarter-back, blocked the point. The Plainsmen scored again the first time they got the ball in the third quarter. Two 15-yard holding penalties nullified a pair of Lorino's fine runs and found Auburn on its own 37 yard line. Nix then rolled out to the right, hit Phillips 20 yards downfield, and "Big Red" pulled away from two Florida defenders and out ran another to the end zone. Phillips received the outstanding player award presented by the Blue Key and determined by the visiting sports writers. He performed like the All-American that he was predicted to be."
