"Birmingham's Legion Field was left with strains of "War Eagle," after Coach Shug Jordan's Auburn Tigers rolled over the Alabama Crimson Tide 40-0 before 44,000 shivering football fans. This was the day the Plainsmen won the National Football Championship, the first Southeastern Conference championship, and for the first time since 1913, went undefeated and untied. Auburn, with a tremendous first half, matched the No. 1 defense in the nation with a versatile offense for its 14th consecutive victory. Tommy Lorino was the key offensive back as he ran four times for 56 yards, and also turned one of Alabama's passes into a 79-yard touchdown run. Center Jackie Burkett and guard Zeke Smith, both sophomores, were key linemen on defense. Burkett also pulled in a Bama pass and outran both his blockers and the entire Tide secondary 66-yards to paydirt. The score at half-time was a surprising 34-0, and the Tigers came back in the third quarter to score the final TD, a 7-yard pass from Lloyd Nix to Jimmy "Red" Phillips. This impressive victory over Bama was proof enough that the No. 1 football team in the nation in 1957 was truly the AUBURN TIGERS." (Description from the 1958 Glomerata) |
