"Auburn rolled up 425 yards, 26 first downs, and threatened Houston's goal line all afternoon but managed to get across for TD's only twice while blanking the Cougars 12-0 before 20,000 in Cliff Hare Stadium. With the injured Howell Tubbs still out of action, Jimmy Cook and Frank Riley directed the Tiger attack and each engineered a scoring drive. Cook passed 23 yards to Jerry Sansom for the first Plainsman tally just as the first half ended. Riley then conducted an 82-yard march that found Bobby Hoppe turning left end for 5 yards and the second Auburn score. Houston, which lost only to Auburn and Ole Miss and managed a 14-14 deadlock with the nation's sixth-ranked Texas Aggies, was a slight favorite to take the decision, but with Tommy Lorino and Jim Walsh both rushing for over a 100 yards and the Tiger line out-charging its opponent throughout the game, the Texans never had a chance."
