"The quick Auburn score stunned the frisky Floridians but did not knock them out. Even after Auburn punched across its second TD midway the third period, Coach Tom Nugent's forces came back more determined than ever and finally marched 65 yards for a tally of their own.The FSU crowd came to the Plains fresh from an upset victory over powerful Mississippi Southern and went all out in an effort to add Auburn to their list of conquests. The Plainsmen were hard pressed at times, but kept the game well in command and threatened the FSU goal numerous times without scoring. A penalty nullified a TD pass from Tubbs to Jerry Sansom in the second quarter and four other drives were stopped near the Seminoles' double stripe by fumbles and rule infractions. Jim Walsh carried across the second Auburn six-pointer from the 3 to culminate a 49-yard drive in the third quarter. The score was the first of the year for Walsh. The hard running fullback picked up 59 yards for his afternoon's efforts, but Bobby Hoppe with 90 and Tommy Lorino with 69 were the top ground gainers. Lorino's total moved him into the SEC rushing leadership. Tubbs connected with Phillips six times for 128 yards. This pushed the speedy end into the number one spot among the conference pass receivers.
Plenty of outstanding work for the Tigers was also turned in by Jerry Elliott, Jerry Wilson, Cleve Wester, James Warren, Chuck Maxime, and Ernie Danjean. Auburn chalked up its fourteenth straight victory in friendly Cliff Hare Stadium as Howell Tubbs and Red Phillips teamed up to form a deadly aerial battery which subdued a stubborn band of Florida State Seminoles, 13-7. A 67-yard pass-run play from Tubbs to Phillips put the Tigers ahead early in the second quarter after an FSU field goal attempt went wide from the Plainsman 8-yard line."
