"Playing his best eleven men instead of alternating his famous X and Y units, Coach Jordan sent his charges against unbeaten Miami, ranked fourth nationally. After a scoreless first quarter, Miami intercepted a pass and returned it deep into Auburn territory. On fourth down, Garrigus lifted a 19 yard aerial to Tom Pepsin and Miami took the lead, 7.0. The score remained unchanged until midway in the third period. Taking an Auburn punt at their own 11 yard line, the Hurricanes advanced the ball to the 47. From here, Bonofiglio went 53 yards to score. Bobby Freeman broke through to block the extra point. Still trailing 13.0 with eleven minutes to play, Bobby Freeman climaxed a 66 yard Auburn drive by sneaking over to score. Childress added the point and the stage was set for the nation's top upset of the week. On the first play after the kickoff, Pyburn crashed through to tackle Bonofiglio, jarring him loose from the ball and Frank D'Agostino recovered on the Miami 25. Five plays later, Joe Childress rammed over from the two and a moment later, he added the tie breaking extra point. Auburn held the Hurricanes and forced them to punt, and when time ran out, the Tigers were threatening again. It was a tremendous team victory for the Tigers, but Joe Childress must be singled out for his tremendous play. The big fullback carried the ball 29 times for 164 yards and scored 8 points. The defensive play of D’Agostino, Pyburn, and Atkins was also worthy of praise. For the victory, Coach Jordan was named U.P.
