"With Travis Tidwell setting the pace, the Auburn Tigers racked up their one SEC win of the season as they edged the University of Florida 20-14, in a hard hitting, spine tingling game played in Montgomery. Tidwell's running and passing were effective as he limped through the bitterly fought battle. The 'Gators drew first blood when Bobby Forbes crashed over the two-yard stripe; however, Auburn was not to be outdone, and with Tidwell reeling through for a touchdown knotted the score at 7-7. Just as the crowd had settled down and with less than a minute remaining in the first half, Freddie Gafford intercepted a Florida Pass and dashed 56 yards for the second Auburn score. Bobby Forbes put the 'Gators out in the fornt in the second half with a beautiful 80 yard dash down the sidelines for a touchdown. Tidwell's scoring pass to Billy Ball clinched the Tigers' only SEC victory of the year." (Description from 1948 Glomerata) |
