Eugene B. Sledge was a combat infantryman in the Marine Corps who fought in the Pacific in World War II. He wrote an account of his combat experiences titled With The Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. The book was published in 1981. Sledge received over 500 pieces of fan mail from people of all backgrounds, including other veterans. Sledge wrote this letter in reply to a letter he received from George B. Clark, a fellow Marine. In the letter, Sledge talks about the overwhelming positive response he's received from veterans about his book. He gives his reason for writing With The Old Breed, namely as a way to tell his family and others of what the combat veterans like him went through. Sledge recounts how he wrote W.T.O.B over a number of years and the steps that led to it becoming published. He describes the book he was working on at the time which told of his experiences in China at the end of World War II (later published as China Marine). He talks about his writing style drawn from his training in writing scientific papers and offers Clark some writing and publishing advice. |
