Summary: | Mrs. W.S. Middlebrook wrote this letter to Eugene B. Sledge on May 29, 1947. Sledge was a combat infantryman in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Pacific during World War II. In the 1940s, Sledge corresponded with several mothers whose sons were killed in the Battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. The mothers wanted to know more about the battles that killed their sons. This is letter is a reply Mrs. Middlebrook wrote Sledge thanking him for his letter telling her about the Pacific campaign. Both her sons fought in the Pacific and one of them was killed. She found Sledge's words to be of great comfort in grieving the loss of her son. In this letter, she shares a few more details about her son's death. |
