Summary: | This picture shows Eugene B. Sledge pointing out something to Elderhostel participants on the University of Montevallo campus. The photo was taken in 1982. Elderhostel is a life-long learning program at the University of Montevallo. Sledge was a combat infantryman with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific in World War II. After the war, Sledge obtained his bachelor's degree and Master of Science degree in biology from Auburn University. He obtained his Ph.D. in biology from the University of Florida then spent his career teaching biology at the University of Montevallo in Alabama until his retirement. In later years, he wrote a book about his World War II combat experience called With The Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. |
