Summary: | This is an early outline for the book that would become With The Old Breed by Eugene B. Sledge. Although forbidden to have a diary, Sledge secretly kept notes on his World War II experiences as they happened and always intended to tell his story and that of his comrades. He wrote out this outline in 1946 shortly after he returned to civilian life. While Sledge would write incidents down over the years, it would be many years later before he turned his narrative into a complete book. This portion of the outline concerns his experiences on the troop transport U.S.S. President Polk and his training in the Pacific before he went into combat. |
