Sledge enlisted in the Marines on December 3, 1942 to fight in World War II. The back of the certificate summarizes his service record and vital statistics. Sledge was qualified as a sharpshooter and a mortar crewman. He fought in the Pacific at Peleliu and Okinawa against the Japanese. Years later Sledge would write a book about his combat experiences titled With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. |
