Fussell wanted Sledge to know that Oxford had asked him to write a new introduction for it, which Fussell was happy to do. Fussell was asked to provide the introduction to WTOB because he was a prominent military historian. Fussell and Sledge corresponded for many years. They felt they had much in common with their combat experiences in World War II and their writings about it. |
