Summary: | Eugene B. Sledge wrote this letter to his friends from his old Marine Corps rifle company K-3-5. Sledge fought with K-3-5 at the Battles of Peleliu and Okinawa in the Pacific in World War II. In the letter, Sledge expresses his anger about an article on the Battle of Okinawa because the author didn't mention K-3-5 at all after Sledge gave him a lot of help with the article. Sledge was insulted that his buddies on the K-3-5 Honor Roll were not even mentioned when the author had based so much of the article on Sledge's book, With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa, in addition to the help he personally received from Sledge. Sledge was always tremendously proud of being part of K-3-5 during the war. He intended his writings to tell not only the story of his experiences but of his rifle company and the men in it. Sledge ended the letter describing an offer he'd received to do a voice-over introduction to a training film on leadership based in part on material from Sledge's book. Sledge was flattered that the filmmaker wanted a combat vet instead of a Hollywood actor but he told the filmmaker he wouldn't do it unless the film mentioned K-3-5 by name. Sledge felt that strongly about pushing the history of his rifle company at every opportunity because he cared more about that than his personal fame. |
