Summary: | Eugene B. Sledge wrote this letter to thank Robert W. Smith for his editorial help with the manuscript for Sledge's book With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. WTOB described Sledge's combat experiences with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific in World War II. In this letter, Sledge expressed his feelings about the book, mainly his relief in finally telling the story of what he and his buddies went through on the front lines. He also talked about his gratitude that so many of his buddies had contacted him to let him know how much they approved of it. Sledge himself was proud of how the book turned out but also retained a sense of humility. He felt he'd done his best to describe his ordeal but had not expected the book to be the popular and sensational success it turned out to be. |
