Summary: | Eugene B. Sledge wrote this letter to Dr. Harris D. Riley, Jr., in reply to letters he'd received from Riley, who was interested in Sledge's ancestry. Rily was particularly interested in Sledge's great grandfather, who was a doctor for the Confederacy in the U.S. Civil War. Sledge gave Riley a quick list of his genealogy and described another great grandfather who was a minister and fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. Sledge concluded the letter with a description of his participation in a panel at the Quantico Command and Staff College. Sledge was a Marine combat veteran who fought in the Pacific in World War II and later wrote about his experiences in the book With The Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. The book was so well-received that Sledge was invited to speak about his experiences to the College along with experts on leadership in combat. Sledge made it clear he never led anyone anywhere, but talked about the quality of the men who led him. |
