In addition to the reason he always gave about telling his story and that of his comrades, Sledge also said in this letter that he included a lot of detail because most people were not familiar with the equipment and other details that used to be common knowledge. He remarked on how these were the type of details of interest to historians. At the time of this letter, Sledge had not yet decided to pursue publication of his manuscript.
