Belle Mina Plantation is a Late Georgian-style home located in the community of Belle Mina, Alabama. The home was constructed in 1826 by Alabama's second governor, Thomas Bibb. Thomas Bibb purchased 2,500 acres of land in Northern Alabama and decided to construct a plantation in the center of it. During the Civil War, the home was occupied by Federal troops.
The plantation house has a front portico with six wide Doric Columns. The slave quarters and kitchen are joined on the side of the one story wing. This is different from most plantations, because most slave quarters were separated from the main house in Alabama. At one time, a brick wall surrounded the plantation house, but it has been removed. The fireplace mantels and interior trim show handplowed moldings, constructed by slave labor. |
