Upon receiving his freedom, John became a barber and earned an income of about $1000 per year. Rapier became influential in the community and upon his death in 1869, was considered a wealthy man. Rapier's son, John Thomas Rapier, became a US senator from the state of Alabama during the Reconstruction. |
