| Summary: | Between 1910 and 1912, the city of Opelika erected the Opelika Colored School, the town’s first black public school. The school was located on East Street and housed ten classrooms. The school catered to students from the first to the tenth grade, and was soon renamed East Street High School due to its location. In 1951, J.W. Darden High School opened and took on East Street’s ninth and tenth grade enrollment. In the aftermath of this realignment, East Street High School became Carver Elementary School. |
