Summary:The George S. Houston Historic District encompasses 2nd Ave., Jefferson St., McClellan St., and Houston St. in Athens, Alabama. This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Development in this district began soon after the town was founded in 1818. There are several homes that remain from the antebellum period. With the exception of First Methodist, the district is entirely residential. The historic district is named after Alabama's 24th Governor. His home is located within the historic district and serves as a memorial library and museum.
