Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia throughout the Civil War, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier general. After the war, he was a member of the U.S. Congress from Alabama from 1875-1893. The letters in this collection describe camp life, the Virginia countryside, and the Confederate army’s defensive works near Yorktown, Virginia, during the Peninsular Campaign in 1862. |
