Walker served with others from his home town of Opelika, Alabama.[page 1] Camp of 39th Reg Ala Vol Near Saltilo Mississippi July 19, 1862 Miss Mary Walker Dear sister I take the pleasure of writing you a few lines to inform you that I am well at this time hopeing that when this reached you it may find you all enjoying the same blessing I have nothing of importance to write to you only health is very bad in our Regiment we have only about 250 men able for duty several of our Company is sick only about 15 of our Company is able for duty both the Wilson boys the three Ethridges and in fact all of the Company that you know is sick I am in very good health myself since I have got over the march to ripley we are Stationed about a half mile from saltilo on hill though we have to toat [page 2] Water about a mile thou we are having wills dug so that in a few days we will we will [sic] have water plenty very handy as it very easy to get water here in wells only one man has died out of our Company yet that I have heard of his name was Price from about Louisville the sick here is very well attended to the hospital is about a half mile from Camp those that was at Tupelo when we left one still there Ingram Wilson is at Tupelo and John is with us he is very sick Capt Hargroves is in very bad health I recon he will be discharged Wes Searcey was discharged yesterday Lieut Wood Starts home this evening on furlough of 50 days Eliott Thomas is all the commissioned officer in the Company able for duty there is great talk of peace up here I do not know how long we will stay here there is no talk of any Yanks about here we fare [page 3] Some better now than we did when we first came here we get tolerable fair Rations and have a better Chance for Cooking than we did before we got our things from Tupelo I am on guard today for the Second time Since I have been in the Service I have nothing more to write at present worth your attention I want you to write to me more regular than you have been doing I have not had a letter Since I left home tell David to write to me Just as soon as you get this as I want to hear from home very bad tell Mr Bryan that William is well and doing very well nothing more so I come to a close I remain your very affectionate Brother J.A.Walker Saltilo Miss July 19, 1862
