Gilliss was an astronomer who worked at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., for much of his naval career. In 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War, Gilliss became superintendent of the observatory, after the previous superintendent left the U.S. Navy to offer his services to the Confederacy. Gilliss remained in that post until his death in 1865.17th June 1864. Dear Sir, Since the death of poor Hubbard and the resignation of Mr. Diebitsch I have no one to call upon for translations such as the within needs, to enable me to reply to it properly. Will you allow one of the C. S's to do it and oblige Yours J. M. Gilliss J. E. Hilgard Esq. H. Street.
