This collection consists of two letters from a Civil War soldier who signs his name “John” or “John H D,” addressed to his sweetheart, Martha A. Cole of Aurora, Indiana. The soldier is almost certainly John H. Denton of Aurora, who later married Martha Cole (Archibald Shaw, ed., History of Dearborn County, Indiana: Her People, Industries and Institutions (Indianapolis: B. F. Bowen, 1915), 657). The letters describe Denton’s participation in a battle on the Rolling Fork river in Kentucky at the end of December 1862 against John Hunt Morgan’s Confederate raiders, and his participation in the Battle of Jonesboro (August 31-September 1, 1864) during William T. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. |
