This is the diary of George W. Bisbee who served with the 9th Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. It contains entries January 1-October 10, 1863. Bisbee refers to guarding Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas, Ill., transporting prisoners to City Point, Va., and exchanging them for Union parolees. Bisbee also describes a soldiers’ oratory club to which he belonged, an athletic contest against the 18th New York Infantry, and the author’s hospitalization.[page 1]

Spent the day in Camp Douglass, Ill Lt. Seligson gave us a New Year supper. We had a nice time weather warm, rained I the evening. Wrote to Lizzie

Went to the city with Barnach & Benson Took dinner at Mr. Nashes! After ten went to Mr. Cofters and spent the evening. Returned to camp at 12 oclock.
Monday, January 5, 1863
Remained in camp all day A man was found drowned in a well near camp. Evening held our first clubb meeting. Question mixer discussion was resolved that the Indian has received mor injury from the white man than the Negro. Disputants. Af to G.W. tucker + P. Habon Neg. to G.S. Benson + G.W. Bisbee. Decided in favor of the Neg.

Morning. On board the boat Eastern state running up the Chessapeake Bay to Anapolis. Arrived at Anapolis at 11 o’clock am. Left Anapolis for Baltimore at 2pm. Arrived in Baltimore 51/2pm. Came to the union relief took supper and lodging.
Wednesday, April 15
In union relief took breakfast and dinner. At 5 o’clock took the boat Ade laide for fortress Monroe. Sea was very rough we got no sleep for some mariens were on board and raised the devil all night.

Decided in favor of the Neg.

On board the cars in Pensylvania stoped on the long Bridge across Baver River which empties into the Ohio just below New Brighton. Arrived in Pittsburgh at 12 A.M. Changed Cars for Baltimore.

Morning on board the cars in Harrisbugh, Pa. It is snowing fast. Passed through York, arrived in Baltimore at 1 ½ oclock P.M. Marched down to Ft. McHenry and stayed over night.

Transferred the prisoners from boat to land. Anchored off City Point. Captain Seligson arrived with his cargo of prisoners. We left the Robert Morris and came abord of his boat.

8 o’clock am set ashore our rebel prisoners and took about (330) some Union Paroled Prisoners. Still laying off City Point walking to exchange officers. All out of rations.

Morning. On board the boat Eastern state running up the Chessapeake Bay to Anapolis. Arrived at Anapolis at 11 o’clock am. Left Anapolis for Baltimore at 2pm. Arrived in Baltimore 51/2pm. Came to the union relief took supper and lodging.
Wednesday, April 15
In union relief took breakfast and dinner. At 5 o’clock took the boat Ade laide for fortress Monroe. Sea was very rough we got no sleep for some mariens were on board and raised the devil all night.

In camp Fixed up our tents and then went on picket and worked on fortification
reinforcements are coming in Quit work on reinforcements went out expecting to have skirmish but did not Canonading was going on all day also some sharpshooting We encamped at night in a beautiful pine grove.
