Owen Saturday 2 The first day is past: the second comes: Prospect looks well & I go to work & we finished our work: we & & my tent mates, were obliged to go a mile & haul a load of wood: I feel very well: detailed for guard O.J. Owen Sunday 3 Got up at 4 a.m. & went to bed. Got up eat our breakfast & at 8” went on picket guard: day cloudy & cold did not enjoy the day well: After all had gone to bed save the sentinel set by the fire near F(-Wood & took notes of the day & then went to bed. Owen [page 2] Monday, January 4, 1864 I rose from my bed & though it was in open air I slept good & warm: Came off guard went to work about our tent making a bunk & laying a flore. Although the day was cold & a little wet yet I enjoyed it all. O.J. Owen Tuesday 5 The morning dawned & I went forth to duty & work: we made a table & christened it with a dish of soup: P.M. wrote a letter Home & in the Evening went to see Charles Davis O.J. Owen Wednesday 6 I commenced the day well: & most of it was taken up in washing my clothes and writing a letter to my brother Charles: Hearing C. Davis was going home I went down & sent my new over coat: Owen [page 3] Thursday, January 7, 1864 The morning was cold & cloudy: after breakfast I went & saw Davis who goes home today: during the day I took a sleep: a pleasant eve passed O.J. Owen Friday 8 4-30 a.m. & I sprang from my bed: at 8” I went on Reg- guard on 3rd relief: some snow having fallen through the night , makes the day quite cold though the sun shines:The day is passed & night comes clear and crystal: deep thoughts in my heart: no sleep. Owen Saturday 9 Having had no sleep I got breakfast before day:was on post till 8 A.M.: most of the day clear and cold: Evening came & a bright fire blazed on the hearth: Mr. Cowee called to see us & a talk of battle Missionary ridge occupied the time: O.J. Owen [page 4] Sunday, January 10, 1864 As the night faded into light I rose from slumber after breakfast I cleaned our tent & prepared for inspection our diner composed of beef and vegetable soup: wrote a letter to ___. Day cloudy: enjoyed good health Evening pleasant: Owen: Monday 11 I rose at 4-40 & got breakfast: morning work over & I spent forenoon reading: dinner at 12”: had nice dish of bean soup Day hazy: military duty goes on: trying to learn Greek alphabet: my mind is more settled studying phrenology: day ends at 8-20 O.J. Owen [page 5] Wednesday, January 13, 1864 Morning opened at 5-50: In a hurry and went over Tenn to work:afternoon went out and rolled logs: day smoky and temperate: 9 of co-“a” roosted in a small coop: Quickly past O.J. Owen Thursday, 14 Did not irse till after 7 after breakfast 10 of us went in the woods & cut 23 sawlogs & went to dinner: stayed in quarters P.M. to take care of things: dismal is the day: Eve comes: were seated round fire: go to bed But not to sleep silence ______Ow Friday 15 It was near 7 when I rose: by time breakfast was over our relief arrived & we came to camp we had a mixture of bean, potaote, & onion soup for dinner moved around a little:cannot write my thoughts O.J. Braningan [page 6] Saturday, January 16, 1864 It was not light when I rose & built a fire & got breakfast Towards noon went out ¾ ms & carried a sack of wood to camp dinner over I washed pants, socks, drawers and shirt: Day shining the work moves steadily on: day ends at 10-20 O.J. Owen Sunday 17 Beautiful and bright the morning: breakfast at 6 spent A.M. reading and singing: soft bread & soup for dinner: P.M. wrote a letter home, deep are my thoughts: detaild for work: but countermanded & ordered t be ready with 3 days rations to march morn 18th: O.J. Owen Monday 18 I woke and heard the spattering rain which told of hardships to come: I rose at 4-5 and cooked pan of beanes and got breakfast: all ready we started in order 11th 36th and 92nd O.V.I. & marched without stoping long enough to even make a cup of quaff till 4-30 P.M. we halted & camped near where we cros” Lookout Mts. A hard day’s mar of over 20 ms: we ate our scanty meal, got wood & lay down and slept soundly. O. [page 7] Tuesday, January 19, 1864 Got up and all ready we started: moved on rapidly & by 11 were in Mc elmore’s cove near “deep gap” loaded up lots of refugees & started for our old camp which we reached about 4 P.M. all tired & sore: morning was cold & a little snow lay on the ground that had falled night before: day clear: camping where we did last night: all quietly sleep at 9 O.J. Owen Wednesday 20 Long before light we rose and were all ready & started at 6-20 a.m. all moved on till the mud clogged and then the tug of war came: at noon we made a cup of coffee and eat the morsel that remained: before us was 10 ms and we made it by 5 P.M. sore tired, & hungry eat a good supper: never suffered as much on a march before: O.J. Owen Thursday 21 Very late getting up but eat a harty meal: morning bright and clear: wrote a letter home: considering all I feel pretty well in body, but solemn is the afternoon: O! Owen [page 9] Monday, January 25, 1864 With blooming health I rose: Having layed out my work I went at it: went out a mile and got a load of wood on a cart and brought it home: P.M. washed clothing and made a chair: On co. drill, first for over 4 months: done some writing. Owen Tuesday 26 The day is warm and pleasant: there were many thing sthat call’d my attention, and before I knew it dinner call beat: hard-tack, tea, fryed steak and rice compsed our dinner: P.M. spent in writing O.J. Owen Wednesday 27 No duty except that of drill: I cooked today: we had beef and vegetable soup for dinner weather continues very pleasant P.M. drew two days soft bread: my health is very good was detailed for 3 days fatigue. Owen [page 10] Thursday, January 28, 1864 Morning dawned and we rose: at 7” we started to work: 1 Sergt and 3 priv- were ordered to load hewed timber: we worked very hard till 1-30 P.M. after which we done very little: day warm and smoky: recd a letter from home & one from C. Davis: chapter today was Eph. 6 –th. O.J. Owen Friday 29 Up at 6” a.m. and to work at 8: working at river on Bridge: day dismal at 12” got dinner: to work at 1-45 P.m. and worked very hard carrying timber quit at 5 P.M.: Many the joke that pass before bed time Owen Saturday 30 Twas hard to rise being sore: went out to work and got wet went to quarters P.M. went out and loaded timber till 2-30. all day cloudy.Silent is the night O.J. Owen [page 11] Sunday, January 31, 1864 Were relieved at 7-30 & came to camp: put house in order: the days cloudy: signed clothing rolls: wrote a letter to father: drew full rations hard tack, sow belly, beanes, rice, coffee, sugar & onions O.J. Owen Monday 1 It was very late when I got up this morning & we had no roll call on account of wet morning: first I mended my shoes; 2nd dinner which was composed of bean soup, bread, and pickled tomatoes, onions and cabbage: rain ceased & day as bright as could be. Tuesday 2 I was up and had breakfast ready by revile: at 8 I was mounted for guard, & on 1” relief at head quarters: a more beautiful day sun has not shown on in “’64”: all Earth shines and speaks insilent tones: Eve :“the wild air stirs & sways” a change in atmosphere: relieved till morrow. Owen [page 12] Wednesday, February 3, 1864 “The wild night is past and lo How beautiful the Earth is now:” Silent not sad the scene appeareth which fancy to the cold north lands of snow beyond the icy “Orcades”: was relieved and washed my clothes.Day passed me in excelent health: all around the light O.J. Owen Thursday 4 Revilee at 6-30: am on police duty cleaning quarters Day very pleasant and clear: Got my order for comutation money: Oft at the close of day I tune my harp to sing the sons of yore: received a letter: quietly around the fire seated we sit and converse of other days: O.J. Owen Friday 5 Beautiful and bright the morning: I rose at 6” and all day long at work: temptations are many but I pray God that he will make me faithful to grace already given me. [page 13] Saturday, February 6, 1864 Up and breakfast over we went over the river at 7-30: worked at the river: some rain fell and the day cold and cloudy: the bridge has 5 piers, it cannot be completed before june O.J. Owen Sunday 7 Did not get to work till late, and had but little to do which was at river: the day was very nice I received a letter from home: quietly we sleep. O.J. Owen Monday 8 Monday morning and we had to get out to work early: we carried timber and logs for the piers: the weather is very fine & we enjoy it O.J. Owen [page 14] Tuesday, February 9, 1864 Were out early, as we were relieved this morning: The splendid sword for Genl Geo-Crook was on exhibition at head qrs costing $700. P.M. fixed clothes. I am enjoying very good health. O.J. Owen Wednesday 10 It has been my custom to get up early & make the fire but, I failed to do it not rising till roll call: Day nice & pleasant: A.M. at work & P.M. wrote a letter home: got orders to be ready to go to Chickamauga Battleground on the 11th O.J. Owen. Thursday 11 A mistake is made & will change the 11th to 12th & 12th to 11th Most of the day spent in fixing to march. washed clothes, sent over coat & oil blanket home. wrote 2 letters & in the Evening went over river & relieved our men. Ends O.J. Owen [page 15] Friday, February 12, 1864 I rose very early & got breakfast & went out to the Chickamauga battle ground & took up our dead & brought off some canes as relicts of the river of death. We got in camp by 5 P.M very tired having marched 20 ms: got orders to march on Sat O.J. Owen Saturday 13 The morning is beautiful & bright. We go to work at 7” we had very little to do: I do not feel very well: In the evening the Veteran fever raged with great fury: O.J. Owen Sunday 14 The fever has abated & we rise came in camp & Veteran fever rose & carried the Regt near 350 reenlisted day wet & dark. Wrote a letter home & one to James Wilson closed at 9 P.M. O.J. [page 16] Monday, February 15, 1864 I am enjoying good health: the day is cloudy & but little going on other than the reenlisting of veteran soldiers all of whom were sworn in at 4 o’clock: wrote a letter to old father Finnigan Tuesday 16 The bugle sounded revile before I was out of bed: Most of the day was spent in making a ring: were payed for 6’ months or to Dec 31st 1’64 was examined & rejected: had a find evening chat O.J. Owen Wednesday 17 The night was bitter cold:I rose at revilee & attended to the duties of a soldier: the day was clear: but cold.Made a nice ring of laurel:at five P.M. we got orders to go to work on the bridge: went over at sunset: O.J. Owen [page 17] Thursday, February 18, 1864 I slept in middle & had to get up & build fire: after breakfast I fell in & co.”a” was sent to boat timber: The day is blustery & cold & snowey: quietly passed the day: O.J. Owen Friday 19 Twas late when I got up: most awful cold this morning: but the sky is clear: Part of co “a” detail on boats taking timber to piers: many good jokes passes: day is gone & night is come: the silver moon shines on the Mt. top. Owen Saturday 20 Morning opened very nice & we all got to work in due time: morning quite cold but as the sun rose the Earth was heated & became comfortable: P.M. saw Serg’t Lonny clem Cavalry made clash on Parsons. Owen [page 18] Sunday, February 21, 1864 Another six days work is o’er:the day commenced dark & sleetish but turned out clear & warm: I feel as well as common: Rec’d a letter from home: My friend Stephen H. smith came & took supper & had a fine talk ends O.J. Owen Monday 22 Was up at roll call this morning a forward movement was made: done up a big washing. Day warm & dismal: John oliver goes to hospital. Went to 18th O.V.I. to see S.H. Smith & enjoyed a long talk of good times that have long passed. O.J. Owen Tuesday 23 Morning opened bright and clear: went in town with Clay & Wilson & had our ambrotypes taken: P.M. got orders to go to convalescent camp: started but came back to roost in the old camp evening was spent in singing deep are my thoughts O.J. Went to meeting in town & heard a discourse from Heb. 2:3 Bro S. Smith came home with me & we had a talk of old times: day warm and smoky : 36th on military display: all is solemn. O.J. Owen Monday 29 For some time the weather has been smoky and now comes the rain though the day was bad we had to work & wash our clothing: Eat only two meals: continues to rain & grow colder: all quiet at 10 P.M. Owen [page 21] Tuesday, March 1, 1864 In comes March, cold and wet: made a ring and present it to Aug Ward: very many things calls my attention: rained near all day: evening: B.f.A.W and I took a good championing and had my hair cut was fooled with medicine. Owen Wednesday 2 The falling waters have eased and a bright clear blue sky hangs over our head: I am in as good health as common am yet with co “a” 36th O.V.I. but not on duty: In P.M. detail sent over river. DeWolf and I had long talk till 12 P.M. Owen Thursday 3 I was late getting up, and feel unwell though able to do for myself: Day was clear and spring like. P.M. feeling bad. I feel much better than I have for some days: O that I may be able to over come my evil habits. O.J. Owen [page 24] Thursday, March 10, 1864 Send $60 home by john sammons wrote 2 letters Day appeared beautiful the day appointed for the old 36th to go home: much passed: at 3-30 the boys fell in and after giving them our best wishes & taking each by the hand they marched in order “colors flying to depot & at 5 saw them roll off. Owen Friday 11 The first morning we (B.F. Clay, John Smith, Amos Wilson, & I ) go through with the movments as usual.Day clear, & lonsom, Eve went to meeting & enjoyed myself well. O.J. Owen Saturday 12 Got a good sleep & rose refreshed, day clear, measures taken to be detached to 18th O.V.I. Eve went to meeting & enjoyed ourselves very much: when returned we asked God’s blessings on us & went to bed O.J. Owen [page 25] Sunday, March 13, 1864 Fresh & much strengthened, both in body and mind Went forward to duty trusting in God, heard a discourse from chap-Bile of 11th O.V.I. from Ps-48:9, day clear, got orders to go to Ringgold, we are separated O shall we meet again O.J. Owen Monday 14 Very lonesom & discontented, pulled down our tents & ready to go to convalescent camp: day dreary & sad O that I could be with the boys of my old acquaintances. Slept in the old camp to bed at 10 O.J. Owen Tuesday 15 Rose and packed things and moved to camp convalescent. To 4th co., all being settled we fixed a place to sleep day cold and had no fire in our tent, went to bed & Slept warm bought a shirt. Owen [page 26] Wednesday, March 16, 1864 Twas late before I got up, the morning being cold, I started out & carried brick & put up a chimney to our tent, feel pretty well, wrote a letter home, quietly Past O.J. Owen Thursday 17 Clear is the sun & much warmer the day so that ‘s quite comfortable, cleaned up a little, amuse myself with reading the Pilgram’s progress, day past and gone O.J. Owen Friday 18 I was a little lazy about geting up. Most of the day spent in thinking, curious weather. Wind blows, dust flies got to bed at 10 all past O.J. Owen [page 27] Saturday, March 19, 1864 Was out by breakfast time feel pretty well washed clothes. Wrote a letter to B.F. Clay, every a hard time for wood day clear. Sunday 20 I was up pretty early, & had things in order and after inspection I went to meeting at Bap ch & heard preaching in camp at 3 P.M. heard a good discourse from chap Whitehead joined the Christian league J Owen Monday 21 Most of the day was spent in reading though I did not leave off my necessary duties of keeping clean quarters day changeable went to meeting & heard a man over 70 years of age. Owen [page 28] Tuesday, March 22, 1864 I rose, but O! what appeard other than a grim snow, I was out to chop wood & a hard day I doth picture “thee”, Snow ceased at 2 P.M. 14 inches having fallen, I keep close O.J. Owen Wednesday 23 The call for breakfast caused me to rise, Old winter thou art not gone, today thou doth again appear. Quietly we pass thee, thou wilt not return, I’m well. O.J. Owen Thursday 24 The day was clear & warm. I had no duty to do, and all goes swiftly on at present there is no stir on the part of our army, cars run to Ringgold “Ga" Owen [page 29] Friday, March 25, 1864 I did not get up till late, The day was wet and sloppy, I did not go out much. No news of importance, we dined on “Mule soup” bread meat and coffee, things are dull. Os. J. Owen Saturday 26 For many days my mind has been on deep study but today I cut them loos. The day clears off. I mend up my clothing and get wood, all called to an examination. I with others was marked to go away.Eve went to meeting O.J. Owen Sunday 27 I went about things as usual after inspection I went to meeting and after meeting I went to the 18th O.V.I. and saw S.H. Smith, talked a while& came to camp. day clear and pleasant O.J. Owen [page 30] Monday, March 28, 1864 Things look like rain I went to the river built a fire, heat water and washed my clothes but could not get them dry, for soon after the rain commenced the wind blew & the rain beat against our shebang. O.J. Owen Tuesday 29 I have been in habit of lying inbed late. I feel as well as common day cold. I wrote a letter to B. Clay, John Smith, A. Wilson got a letter from B. Clay. Got some wood. Got some Butter. Go to bed at 10 P.M. Owen, O.J. Wednesday 30 I do not feel very well. The day is cold & windy. O how the smoke comes into my eyes. P.J got some wood evening cool. Was up till 11 o’clock & then retired to rest. O.J. Owen [page 31] Thursday, March 31, 1864 This the last day of the month is very much unlike the first. I am well. I fixed my boots & then wrote a letter home day clear & pleasant O.J. Owen Friday, April 1 Most of the day was spent in reading a paper and books, and from which I gained much good information Principal part of the day was cold, and cloudy O.J. Owen Saturday 2 While I was washing the dishes I was ordered to go out for wood I went out near Mission Ridge & cut wood, and got back at 2 P.M. I then read some and after roll call went to meeting. Text Luke 16:24 enjoy myself O.J. Owen [page 32] Sunday, April 3, 1864 I was up earlier than common breakfast over, dished washed and qrs in order. I dressed and went to meeting. Got a good seat, & heard a discourse from Rev. 1:7 after which the congregation repaired to the Tenn. And chap 15th Ind administered baptism to 5 soldiers, a blessed sight. Day very fair: got letter Owen Monday 4 When I rose I found the falling rain, I eat my breakfast and patched my pants, we had bread, quif, beef, and crout for dinner after dinner I wrote a letter to V.B. Owen. Tuesday 5 I am still at Chattanooga Tenn, I spend the day in reading, and mending my socks. I spent most of the evening with J. Davis, C. Perkins, and Dr. Nott. I did not retire to rest til near 11 O’clock P.M. Os. J. Owen [page 33] Wednesday, April 6, 1864 Hick got me out a little earlier than common. Most of the a.m. was gone, and I took my clothes to the river and washed them. (4 shirts, 3prs drawers, 1 pr socks, 1 towel and handkerchief). Day clear. Practicing from Ft. Wood. “I’ll try to keep my promise”. O.J. Owen Thursday 7 The forenoon was spent in reading. At 12 M the guns at Ft Wood spoke in tones of thunder. P.M. went to the garden and put out onions till 4-30 after supper I went to meeting and returned at 8-30 Owen Friday 8 Weather is changeable wet and sloppy. I got some wood from the river and read my book through the day, and after supper I again shaped my steps for church. I enjoyed myself very well. O for a closer walk with God. J. Weather cold and cloudy I spend my moments in reading.Took a shave shaved 3 other boys.The night was so dark and bad that I stay in Oscar J. Owen Sunday 10 I rose at or about 6” this morning After my work was over I sit down by the fire.The morning was old, cloudy and occasionally a drop fo rain, went to meeting, and was glad.Text Heb: 10:29 O.J. Owen Monday 11 I rose at 5-30 and Having adopted a code of principals or rather, rules by which to be governed respecting the exercise of the day. I set me down to commence them, hoping they may do good. Morning clear at work in garden all day and eve went to meeting J. Owen [page 35] Tuesday, April 12, 1864 The morning was raw and wet. Saw A. Hofman and heard from the front that the work of God was going on 44 were baptized and near 150 converted. A.M. worked a little in garden but rain stoped us. Owen [page 71] Friday, July 29, 1864 I rose & had our morning refreshment. We lay still today the sun thrives hot, the 6th corps & part of the 19th came out to help us. We drew our rations of whiskey the poping of guns sounds like skirmishing but its not. Evening B.f. Sammons & Geo Wharff came over Evening hot. Owen Saturday 30 Should the government do no justice we would start for our home today. the day is warm & up to 12 no move, about 2: P.M. the bugle sounded “strike tents” & we moved back I with some more were left at the “Sandy Hook” Md by order of Dre command moved on Owen Sunday 31 Got up late. Felt very bad. Got a bite to eat. The day hot. We layed around under the tent & under the shade all day with no rations only what we happened to have left at night we lay down ion the ground. Owen [page 72] Monday, August 1, 1864 The morning is dark & heavy but after a while the sun shines with intense heat. Just 3 years ago today we went in camp at Marietta Ohio. Were examined by the Surgeon in the P.M. drew rations & again lay down to sleep. J.O. Owen Tuesday 2 We got up about 5-3 a.m. the day was just about as hot as 3 yr ago today. we got dinner and file in ranks went to Dr. & were sent down the river about 2 ms in to convalescent camp. a. Wilson H.O. McClure & I mess together C. Perkins & J. Davis were left at Hospital slept in mans house O.J. Owen Wednesday 3 Got out about 5” & got a bite to eat. Layed around all day the day is very hot. The boys have commited depradations in town so that we have to put on a camp guard. I went on Guard at 8 P.M. & relieved at 10 to report in the morning. Owen [page 73] Thursday, August 4, 1864 I slept on a very rough piece of ground & felt very tired this morning, went on guard at 8 & off at 10 A.M. The day is much cooler. Important news from Sherman & the raiders in Transylvania. We got orders & moved to Sandy Hook & lay down for the night Owen Friday 5 Got up & got a bite to eat. All day we layed around waiting for orders but got none the day was warm & we lay on a steep hill in the shade of night we mad a bed & lay down Owen Saturday 6 The rain drove us out we made a tent at 7” we went to the rail road & drew rations & layed around all day. the 6th corps came in on cars at 4 ½ P.M. we heard the 8 corps was in ____ a mile back. We reported to the co. O.Owen [page 74] Sunday, August 7, 1864 Was up to roll call & got breakfast. I feel very near worn out. I wrote a letter Home. we lay around till near 5 P.M. when co. “A” drew 1 d rations of soft bread & went on Picket but could not find the post & lay down. Owen Monday 8 Done up our blankets & went to find Post. We found it & went on guard. We had a very good time till about 2” P.M. got orders to report to camp which we did & then started on the march & crossed the ferry went up & camped on the nice Shenandoah. O.J.O. Tuesday 9 The day is warm but we lay in camp all day. I washed my clothes in the river I do not feel very well. The boys are all pretty well played out. In the evening we drew 2 d’s rations & had one all: to last 4 d’s. O.J.O. [page 75] Wednesday, August 10, 1864 Were up at 2” & on the march at 3-30.the morning was cool but we moved steady & the sun poured down heat. We stoped about 2 hours & got dinner & then marched to Berryville & went in camp for the night. Tired & wear. O.J.O. Thursday 11 Morning came & we got a bite to eat & on the march for Winchester we had a hot day for the march we did not camp till dark. A sharp skirmish to our right with some artillery. Friday 12 Pulled out & marched on to Middletown & got dinner & then moved on out to cidar creek, where we we formed line of battle & had sharp skirmishing & 2 Regts charged & drove the enemy, went to sleep. Owen Saturday 2 The first day is past: the second comes: Prospect looks well & I go to work & we finished our work: we & & my tent mates, were obliged to go a mile & haul a load of wood: I feel very well: detailed for guard O.J. Owen Sunday 3 Got up at 4 a.m. & went to bed. Got up eat our breakfast & at 8” went on picket guard: day cloudy & cold did not enjoy the day well: After all had gone to bed save the sentinel set by the fire near F(-Wood & took notes of the day & then went to bed. Owen Friday 8 4-30 a.m. & I sprang from my bed: at 8” I went on Reg- guard on 3rd relief: some snow having fallen through the night , makes the day quite cold though the sun shines:The day is passed & night comes clear and crystal: deep thoughts in my heart: no sleep. Owen Monday 18 I woke and heard the spattering rain which told of hardships to come: I rose at 4-5 and cooked pan of beanes and got breakfast: all ready we started in order 11th 36th and 92nd O.V.I. & marched without stoping long enough to even make a cup of quaff till 4-30 P.M. we halted & camped near where we cros” Lookout Mts. [page 7] Tuesday, January 19, 1864 Got up and all ready we started: moved on rapidly & by 11 were in Mc elmore’s cove near “deep gap” loaded up lots of refugees & started for our old camp which we reached about 4 P.M. all tired & sore: morning was cold & a little snow lay on the ground that had falled night before: day clear: camping where we did last night: all quietly sleep at 9 O.J. Owen Wednesday 20 Long before light we rose and were all ready & started at 6-20 a.m. all moved on till the mud clogged and then the tug of war came: at noon we made a cup of coffee and eat the morsel that remained: before us was 10 ms and we made it by 5 P.M. sore tired, & hungry eat a good supper: never suffered as much on a march before: O.J. Owen Monday 1 It was very late when I got up this morning & we had no roll call on account of wet morning: first I mended my shoes; 2nd dinner which was composed of bean soup, bread, and pickled tomatoes, onions and cabbage: rain ceased & day as bright as could be. Tuesday 2 I was up and had breakfast ready by revile: at 8 I was mounted for guard, & on 1” relief at head quarters: a more beautiful day sun has not shown on in “’64”: all Earth shines and speaks insilent tones: Eve :“the wild air stirs & sways” a change in atmosphere: relieved till morrow. Owen Monday 8 Monday morning and we had to get out to work early: we carried timber and logs for the piers: the weather is very fine & we enjoy it O.J. Owen [page 14] Tuesday, February 9, 1864 Were out early, as we were relieved this morning: The splendid sword for Genl Geo-Crook was on exhibition at head qrs costing $700. P.M. fixed clothes. I am enjoying very good health. O.J. Owen Wednesday 10 It has been my custom to get up early & make the fire but, I failed to do it not rising till roll call: Day nice & pleasant: A.M. at work & P.M. wrote a letter home: got orders to be ready to go to Chickamauga Battleground on the 11th O.J. Thursday 11 A mistake is made & will change the 11th to 12th & 12th to 11th Most of the day spent in fixing to march. washed clothes, sent over coat & oil blanket home. wrote 2 letters & in the Evening went over river & relieved our men. Owen [page 15] Friday, February 12, 1864 I rose very early & got breakfast & went out to the Chickamauga battle ground & took up our dead & brought off some canes as relicts of the river of death. We got in camp by 5 P.M very tired having marched 20 ms: got orders to march on Sat O.J. Owen Saturday 13 The morning is beautiful & bright. We go to work at 7” we had very little to do: I do not feel very well: In the evening the Veteran fever raged with great fury: O.J. Owen Sunday 14 The fever has abated & we rise came in camp & Veteran fever rose & carried the Regt near 350 reenlisted day wet & dark. Wrote a letter home & one to James Wilson closed at 9 P.M. O.J. [page 16] Monday, February 15, 1864 I am enjoying good health: the day is cloudy & but little going on other than the reenlisting of veteran soldiers all of whom were sworn in at 4 o’clock: wrote a letter to old father Finnigan Tuesday 16 The bugle sounded revile before I was out of bed: Most of the day was spent in making a ring: were payed for 6’ months or to Dec 31st 1’64 was examined & rejected: had a find evening chat O.J. I washed my clothes & dryed them and went to town. Some of the boys got passes & start home wrote to C. David well. O.Owen Saturday 9 Morning came on & a Bright day. A. Wilson B . Clay I. Palmer & others go to Gallipolis in a canoe. I passed the Day very well & in the evening got orders to go But did not get off. I am on guard today. O.J. Owen Tuesday 12 I slept very sound & I did not rise till the sun was shining. I feel well the day is warm. Relieved from guard & stayed in camp. I got acquainted with an Welchman. John Oliver got some bread & we went to bed Oscar Owen Wednesday 13 After breakfast we packed up & went aboard the Steamer Heartuper & rode to the foot of Blannerhasart and drew grup & changed on the Progress & went to P-Burg by 5 P.M. I sent my clothes home by Mr. True. At 8 we got on the car & go for ClarksBurg. Owen [page 66] Thursday, July 14, 1864 We found our train had not got to C-Burg go on all day & passed through 12 tunnels & many towns & stations, crossed Cheat mts & river at 4” to 6 P.M. & on we rolled but I went to sleep & knew nothing till morning. Owen Friday 15 We got to Cumberland & stoped a little while this morn & then on we went passing Hancock & other places where the Enemy had torn up things. We arrived at M. Burg about 7” P.M. & went in camp. got to bed & took a rest. Owen Saturday 16 Rose at daylight & passed the day in camp which was warm. I do not feel very well today. A member of the boys came up that had been Home so that the 36th begins to look like itself. Drew rations & ammunition & got orders to march at 3 in morn. Owen [page 67] Sunday, July 17, 1864 We got breakfast & were ready & off by 4”. 36th in advance train in center & 13th Va I. in rear under Col. Devol. We marched heard through the broiling sun to the Shenandoah River & camped we have Battery B, 5th U.S. A. marched 23 ms. Our Pickets fired on & excitement. O.J. Owen Monday 18 We lay till 9 when we fell in & started to join Co. Hayse but halted till 12 got dinner & drew rations after which we marched on to within sight of Charlestown & turned back to our left & camped at dark. Having marched 9 ms. Heavy firing up the river. Go to bed. Oscar Owen Tuesday 19 Quiet all night. Rose at daylight. 36th sent out at 8 to skirmish & see the enemy. Found them about a mile off we drew back & were reinforced by 23rd & 12th V.V.I & 2 pieces artillery 21st ____lay till 4 P.M. & enemy got in our rear & came near surrounding us, but we drove them with a loss of 3 k. & wounded in 36, fell back to old camp for night One of the Battery men was severly wounded right thigh broke by 6 cb shell . we saved our train [page 68] Wednesday, July 20, 1864 About 3” we were called up to make coffee but did not have time till were ordered to march. fell in & marched 3 or 4 miles & got a bite to eat. I am very near run down so that I can but just keep up. There are 4 Regts with us 12th 23rd __Vol. & 36th O.V.V. I. 5th & 13th Va. I. & 1 NY German Battery co. Hayse com’dg Brigade. Had a fine rain. 4 P.M. started & march to Charlestown & camp for the night. I am very near give out. Thursday 21 Wakened at 3” & got breakfast packed up & at 5 we lit out on the Berryville pike. We marched to the town & through with flying colors. From there we took the pike for Snickers ferry. Camped for dinner 1 hour marched within 2 ms. Of ferry & turned back & camped for the night near our camp for dinner. Having marched 14 miles. Great excitement about Lee on the road for Washington Gen Crook loss 250 Friday 22 I got up at daylight & got ready to move drew rations. Gen Averill whiped the rebs at Winchester on Wednesday & took 5 pieces of artillery & 300 prisoners. Left our camp & marched to Winchester & camped ¾ mile out I stayed in for the night. Saw Geo Wharff & Mathews. Lay down early. Owen [page 69] Saturday, July 23, 1864 The sun was up when we rose & we got breakfast. Shortly after skirmishing commenced & we all moved out in line & marched 3 ½ ms & found no force in our front so we returned to camp. I am well the sky is smoky. Go to bed early. Oscar. Sunday 24 We rose & went through with the duties. J. Smith & I went to guard a house, at 12 the Enemy advanced on in force & we drew out our troops & formed our line by 2 P.M. no sooner had we done so than the rebs advanced on our left & fanked us & after loosing many of our brave boys we fell back from winchester to bunker Hill. The rebs follow us close our loss was 148 K.W. & M. Owen Monday 25 Slept none to speak of & started this morning without any thing to eat we fell back our Brig- covering the retreat. & got to Martinsburg by 2 P.M. & formed our line & held the rebs till the thing & train was all taken out & then we fell back out of town. We then made a charge & drove the rebs out & then we marched to Williamsport. Owen [page 70] Tuesday, July 26, 1864 I did not get to bed till 2 & got up at 5. after breakfast we drew rations & marched to the river (1/2 ms) crossed & marched to Sharpesburg & on 1 ½ ms & camped for the night where we took a good supper & nights rest. The enemy are at the ford & some skirmishing going on. I drew a pair shoes. Os. Owen Wednesday 27 Got up before daylight & got our breakfast & layed around till 8” a.m. when we go orders & march I got into a wagon & road to Harpers ferry & then I marched out to camp in Pleasant Valley. The day is warm, In the evening some of the 110th O.V.I. came over. I wrote a line home & went to bed. Owen Thursday 28 Was up at roll call but my feet are so sore that I can but just get about. The day is warm but by 1 P.M. we have appearance of rain got my clothes washed, got orders & marched at 5 P.M. & crossed the river marched to Hall T. & camped in the woods. Very tired. We drew our rations of whiskey the poping of guns sounds like skirmishing but its not. Evening B.f. Sammons & Geo Wharff came over Evening hot. Owen Saturday 30 Should the government do no justice we would start for our home today. the day is warm & up to 12 no move, about 2: P.M. the bugle sounded “strike tents” & we moved back I with some more were left at the “Sandy Hook” Md by order of Dre command moved on Owen Sunday 31 Got up late. Felt very bad. Got a bite to eat. The day hot. We layed around under the tent & under the shade all day with no rations only what we happened to have left at night we lay down ion the ground. Owen [page 72] Monday, August 1, 1864 The morning is dark & heavy but after a while the sun shines with intense heat. Just 3 years ago today we went in camp at Marietta Ohio. Were examined by the Surgeon in the P.M. drew rations & again lay down to sleep. J.O. Owen Tuesday 2 We got up about 5-3 a.m. the day was just about as hot as 3 yr ago today. we got dinner and file in ranks went to Dr. & were sent down the river about 2 ms in to convalescent camp. a. Layed around all day the day is very hot. The boys have commited depradations in town so that we have to put on a camp guard. I went on Guard at 8 P.M. & relieved at 10 to report in the morning. Owen [page 73] Thursday, August 4, 1864 I slept on a very rough piece of ground & felt very tired this morning, went on guard at 8 & off at 10 A.M. The day is much cooler. Important news from Sherman & the raiders in Transylvania. We got orders & moved to Sandy Hook & lay down for the night Owen Friday 5 Got up & got a bite to eat. All day we layed around waiting for orders but got none the day was warm & we lay on a steep hill in the shade of night we mad a bed & lay down Owen Saturday 6 The rain drove us out we made a tent at 7” we went to the rail road & drew rations & layed around all day. the 6th corps came in on cars at 4 ½ P.M. we heard the 8 corps was in ____ a mile back. I wrote a letter Home. we lay around till near 5 P.M. when co. “A” drew 1 d rations of soft bread & went on Picket but could not find the post & lay down. Owen Monday 8 Done up our blankets & went to find Post. We found it & went on guard. We had a very good time till about 2” P.M. got orders to report to camp which we did & then started on the march & crossed the ferry went up & camped on the nice Shenandoah. O.J.O. Thursday 11 Morning came & we got a bite to eat & on the march for Winchester we had a hot day for the march we did not camp till dark. A sharp skirmish to our right with some artillery. Friday 12 Pulled out & marched on to Middletown & got dinner & then moved on out to cidar creek, where we we formed line of battle & had sharp skirmishing & 2 Regts charged & drove the enemy, went to sleep.
