Cherry writes that he is sending home Henry, probably a slave , due to illness. This item has been aggregated as part of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL)'s "Deeply Rooted: The Agricultural & Rural History of the American South" project.[page 1] Camp 45th Ala Regt April 25th 1864 Dear Fannie I have very little to write you but that I send Henry home, because he is threatened with a protracted fever, and I might be obliged to leave him if we were to move from here He can tell you how we are getting along here I [crossed out: never] get but few letters from you lately What is the reason? I understand that nearly everybody is sick about home and am consequently continually uneasy about my relatives and friends Will you not write me a letter occasionally? [Crossed out: To] What have you determined about the visit? If you come, be prepared to stay several days, or to return immediately – either. – I would be glad to know the day you intend to start some time before hand, as it is difficult to get a place to stay at. There are lots of Rumors afloat about moves and fights, and we do not know how much credit to give them. I am very sorry that Henry has got sick, and more especially if you come to see me, and may be it would be better for you to wait until he gets well, before you come and bring him with you. I do despise to be so much at the beck of authorities. Can't form even an idea of the best way to do So I just leave it with you and trust in providence for the result [page 2] May God bless us all, and yet give us peace and happiness together G.W.
