Summary:John Carew Powell was a student at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1917. He was born on 05/16/1893 in Montgomery, Alabama and died in Orlando, Florida on 12/02/1975. He was the youngest child of George Matthews and Rebecca Ann Shackelford Carew Powell, and grandson of John Powell, who was an influential furniture dealer and manufacturer in Montgomery. He was a distant cousin of William "Whitey" Overton, Jr. After graduating from API, John C. Powell became the contract man for an independent oil operator in Kansas. He later moved to Orlando, Florida. He married Lenore Sarah Fox on 07/19/1932 in Wichita, Kansas and had two girls. One daughter, Sondra Powell died at the age of 21 from cancer. The Sondra Lenore Powell Office Building, built by John C. Powell in Orlando, Florida is named in her honor.
