Summary:Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC)cadets may become officers in either the Navy or Marines. General Holland M. Smith, USMC, an Alabama native, is shown reviewing the NROTC unit at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in October 1945. Holland McTyeire Smith grew up in Seale, Alabama, and graduated from API in 1901 (and from the University of Alabama law school in 1903), practising law in Montgomery before entering the military in 1905. He had a distinguished career which included both World Wars, and retired in May 1946. His nickname was ""Howling Mad"" Smith. At the time of this photograph, Smith was head of the Marine Training and Replacement Command (Camp Pendleton, CA).
