During the 1972 campaign for U.S. Senate, Blount ran as a Republican against incumbent Democrat John Sparkman, who ultimately won reelection. 0:21:09: Interview with Winton Blount, candidate for U.S. Senate, after he won the state Republican primary on May 2, 1972. He discusses the outcome of recent election, as well as his prospects for winning the general election in November. (Ultimately, Blount lost to Democratic incumbent John Sparkman.) 0:22:28: Reporter from WSFA-TV interviewing Winton Blount at Court Square in downtown Montgomery on March 20, 1971, the day he opened the headquarters for his U.S. Senate campaign. 0:22:37: Dr. David Mathews presenting an honorary Doctor of Science degree to Winton Blount during commencement exercises at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa on May 30, 1971. Also included is a brief, silent clip of the graduation ceremony at Auburn University on June 8, during which Dr. Harry Philpott is handing out diplomas. 0:24:56: Winton Blount speaking with reporters and local Republican Party leaders in Selma on December 16, 1971. At the time, Blount was traveling around the state to determine whether voters would be supportive of him if he chose to run for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat John Sparkman in 1972. 0:27:43: Winton Blount addressing the annual dinner meeting of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce at the Jefferson Davis Hotel on January 13, 1969. 0:29:19: Postmaster General Winton Blount addressing the annual luncheon of the Alabama Road Builders Association on January 30, 1970, at the Jefferson Davis Hotel in Montgomery.
