On the west bank of Coosa River, in Shelby oounty, is a
station on Southern Ry. called IU.LLORY; a flag-stop with !hort siding.
On one side of the railroad is an old fort, chisfly earthern re40ubts,
manned during the War Between the States, by an artillery company w11h
5 or 6 formidable 3- and 5-inch cannon, for protection of the bridge
over the Coosa river. A sl. milar fortification was on the Talladega
side. The gUDI were removsd by the Federal troope; but numerous shells
were left, and recovered as priz~s by boys in the neighborhood, who
• used the old fort as a play-ground, for years afterwards.
Across the railroad from the old fort, stood the large,
two-story residence of Capt, James & thall, a Confederate officer or
notable bravery, and unblemished character. Possibly this maDti&
spirit was kept alive, b the ever-present view of the 01' fort wi~
its war-time associations as a post-war incident suggests: The story,
well known throughout'Shelby County ooncerns Capt. ,althall and another
( ex-Confederate officer, jor Pitts - aristocratic and high-strung, was
of much the same type as the dashing cavalry aaptian. The two had been
friends for many years, but a misunderstanding over a trivial matter
put them at outs and trouble was expeoted when they met. Both armed
themaelves and freely expreseed a determin*tion to have "Satisfeotion/"
They met in a pUblio road one morning, Both were on horseback;
.,al. thall aillone, Fitts acoompanied by a friend of both men. Both
opened fire as soon as within pistol rangs; the horsss took fright
and bsgan Whesling around in the roed, while the riders, took another

the only shot taking effect, slightly wounded Pitts' mount.

cried .al thall. "I have plenty. Come aDd get some of mire ."
