Summary:In the letter Gibson describes his train journey from Tuskegee, Alabama to Memphis, Tennessee at the start of the Civil War. He writes detailed descriptions of the areas he traveled through, including poor land and poverty around LaGrange, Georgia, and he expresses delight in seeing mountains in the Chattanooga area. Of particular interest are his descriptions of the crowds in Tuskegee at the train's departure and of the Western and Atlantic Railroad Tunnel in north Georgia. He also briefly describes Atlanta and Memphis. A transcription is included.
