Description
Summary:Benjamin Russell, chairman of the Tallapoosa County Council of Defense, encloses copies of threatening letters addressed to J.A. Lehman, a Jewish merchant in Alexander City, and his landlady, Mrs. Goggans. Lehman's letter reads, "Sir: You are hearby given 30 days notice to make your arrangements to leave this town. if you refuse we are going to hang you to a light pole, so take your choise [sic], and let us know by moving or not moving, and we will do the rest. This 29th day of July." The letter is signed, "GERMAN HATERS." In a similar letter to Mrs. Goggans, the anonymous writers demand that she "move [Lehman] out of [her] house before the 30 days is out" or they will harm him. Russell implores the Alabama Council of Defense to assist in identifying the writers. He asserts, "Mr. Lehman has done nothing to bring about this matter. He is simply a Jew and some people who have not taken the trouble to investigate think that he was born in Germany and came to this country from there."
