Description
Summary:During World War II, Byron Yarbrough (a native of Auburn, Alabama) served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Pacific on Landing Craft Infantry ship LCI-449. He began writing to Betty Jones, a resident of Cordele, Georgia, in November of 1944. The two had not met before, but over the next four months they developed a romantic relationship through their correspondence. Byron was killed during an attack near Iwo Jima on February 17, 1945, but Betty did not learn of his death for almost a month; she continued to write letters daily until March 10. (Transcripts of the letters are included.)
