During the Civil War, Danielly was a member of the 14th Alabama Infantry, Company K. In this letter he writes that the company has still not moved from their camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia, although the men "have been expecting to leave here 3 weeks." Danielly discusses the mail system, noting that it has been three weeks since he received a letter from home and asking Elizabeth to send stamps by Mr. Welch. Although he mentions sending money home, he writes that supplies are so expensive that he cannot spare his wages: "I don't know what situation I may be placed in and I may need it. I have to have to by some things to eat that is nourishing and it takes a heep of money to by but little." [Original spelling retained.] |
