In this letter his gives his first impressions of England and France, discussing his visits to Winchester Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame Cathedral, and Versailles. Stout also provides a detailed description of his first flying lessons with M. Fouche, a French instructor; that flight was particularly rough: "We would glide along smoothly then drop a few hundred feet like a rocket, rocking from side to side."
