Summary: | During World War I Stout was a pilot, eventually serving as a lieutenant in the 27th Aero Squadron, First Pursuit Group. In this letter he describes his four-day journey to Europe aboard a troop transport ship, including the on-ship blackouts: "As dark comes all the ports are closed and no lights are allowed on the deck whatsoever not even a cigarette or a pipe." He also notes that the ship does not sound the fog horn even in heavy fog because "the danger of being detected by a submarine is more serious than the probability of a collision." Names of places and the ship have been censored. A transcription is included. |
