Summary:The regiment was created at Charleston, Tennessee, in November 1863 by combining four companies of the 1st Battalion, Hilliard's Legion with the six companies of the 3rd Battalion. Company E was originally Company A. 3rd Battalion, Hilliard's Legion. It saw action in east Tennessee and Virginia. The book contains information, recorded by Captain James W. Stokes, about the soldiers in the company; details include names, physical descriptions, birth dates, clothing allowances, and salaries. Much of the book is arranged alphabetically by soldier. In the back are the following descriptive lists: "Pay and Clothing Accounts of ... Deceased Soldiers;" "Promotions;" "Discharged;" "Desertion;" "Absent on Furlough;" and "Ordnances and Ordnance Stores Received."
