Summary: | From June 1862 to November 1863, Bolling Hall, Jr., was lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Battalion, Hilliard's Legion. In the letter he discusses recent troop movements and upcoming campaigns; conditions in their new camp ("The water here is limestone. I think all the men will...be sick in a short time from drinking it"); arms the men will soon receive, and his own responsibilities ("I cannot personally command this Battalion & then generally command the whole Legion in addition. I believe I could manage either by itself but not both"). He also describes an incident in which Lt. Col. Jack Thorington delegated his duties to Hall: "He was afraid something might go wrong in the arranging camps or reporting & fixing up when we first arrived here & did not want to take the responsibility himself so he threw it all on me. I intend reporting him to Col. Hilliard when he arrives." A transcription is included. |
