In the letter he discusses recent troop movements ("it became evident that the retreat had commenced"); men who have been captured or are ill; upcoming campaigns ("the great fight which is to decide the fate of Mississippi"); the low morale of the soldiers ("We all feel depressed at the news from all quarters") but the continued hope for success ("I know you all feel uneasy in Alabama but I still hope for the best.
